Huon Pine Wig Stand
Huon Pine ~ One of the oldest plants on Earth
Huon pine is the Prince of Australian timbers. The richness of color and elaborate grain makes it one of the
world’s most desirable timbers. The wood is extremely durable due its natural essential oils, primarily methyl
eugenol, which also emits a lovely perfume whose fragrance is unmistakable. The oil also has preservative qualities
that resist rotting and also naturally deters insects. Because it thrives in some of the roughest terrain in the world,
it has been more difficult to harvest than other Australian timbers. This has resulted in Huon pine traditionally
being at least triple the price of common hardwoods, and, with its scarcity today, that has increased to a factor of
six or seven.
The supply is now carefully nurtured and controlled. Eighty per cent of Huon pine forests are reserved and much
of the resource that is available comes from logs salvaged from rivers and the forest floor. Supply is about 500 cu.
meters per year and only for the specialist craft and furniture industries for the next fifty years.
